India is set to receive Rs 10,000 crore in foreign direct investment (FDI) from Cyprus-based shipping giants, Interorient Navigation and Danship & Partners, marking the single largest FDI in the Indian shipping sector since it was opened to overseas investment in 2005.
According to PTI, the announcement was made on 08 July, 2025, and the development is expected to significantly boost India's shipping infrastructure and capabilities. The landmark investment announcement comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic visit to Cyprus on 15 June 2025, where he held significant talks with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
“All ships acquired under the initiative will be registered under the Indian flag,” officials confirmed, which will expand the country’s shipping capacity and help retain freight income domestically. This move is also projected to enhance employment and trade benefits across the economy. The investment is seen as a turning point for India’s maritime industry, potentially transforming it into a more competitive global player and reinforcing its role in international logistics.
Interorient Navigation, established in 1979, operates a fleet of over 100 vessels globally and is recognised as one of the most established players in international shipping. Danship & Partners, on the other hand, specializes in maritime services such as shipbroking, commercial management, and consultancy across the global shipping sector.
