The Kerala Coastal Zone Management Authority (KCZMA) has granted CRZ clearance for the proposed Chennur-Kothad bridge, a long-awaited development. With this, nearly 5,000 residents of Chennur, a remote island in Kerala's Kadamakudy panchayat (Ernakulam district), are finally seeing progress in their demand for mainland connectivity.
“A major hurdle has been cleared with the CRZ nod,” said Sheeja Jose, Chennur Ward member. She urged authorities to swiftly complete land acquisition and begin construction. Currently, residents must travel 16 km via the Varapuzha bridge to access Kochi city through Container Road.
The proposed bridge will reduce this distance to just four km, drastically improving mobility and safety.
