Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced on 24 June, 2025 that the Central government has agreed to establish a nuclear power plant in Bihar, marking a significant step in boosting the state’s energy infrastructure. The declaration was made during a press conference in Patna, following a meeting of energy ministers from Eastern states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
As part of the broader national energy strategy, the Minister also revealed that the government plans to install six small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) across the country, with one designated for Bihar. SMRs are advanced nuclear reactors designed for enhanced safety, flexibility, and reduced land usage, making them suitable for new regions like Bihar. “The central government is ready to fully help the Bihar govt in this project,” he stated, highlighting the importance of regional energy development.
This marks Bihar’s entry into India’s civil nuclear energy roadmap, potentially improving the state’s power reliability and attracting industrial investment. The exact location and timeline for the plant are yet to be finalised.
