The Centre has recommended environmental clearance (EC) for the diversion of 874.924 hectares of forest land to expand iron ore mining by NMDC in Chhattisgarh’s Bailadila Reserve Forest (BRF), located in Dantewada district.
The proposal, which aims to increase the production capacity from 11.30 million tonne per annum (MTPA) to 14.50 MTPA, has faced opposition due to concerns over environmental impact, particularly on local water sources, ancient trees, and rare wildlife. NMDC had obtained forest clearance for the land in 2020, valid until 2037. The company has committed to a site-specific conservation plan and has submitted Rs 10.25 crore for the protection of the reserve.
The BRF, known for its biodiversity, is home to species like the sloth bear, leopard, Bengal fox, and the Bastar Hill Myna.
