The government is keen to set up an offshore wind power project in the country, along the Gujarat coast. It has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for undertaking the wind power project.
The MoU was signed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE), and a consortium of partners consisting of NTPC, Power Grid Corporation, Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), Power Finance Corporation, Power Trading Corporation and Gujarat Power Corporation.
This proposed plant along the Gujarat coast will have a capacity of around 100 MW. The JB company will implement the necessary steps for execution of the wind power project.
India has about 7,600 km of coastline, which offers great potential for offshore wind power development.
