The Central government has announced an additional investment of Rs 1,000 crore in Inland Waterways projects across Assam and the Northeast by 2026.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, made the announcement after reviewing ongoing projects with officials from IWAI, PWD, IPRCL, and CSL at the Maritime Skill Development Centre in Guwahati. This new allocation is in addition to projects worth Rs 1,000 crore already underway in the region, of which Rs 300 crore work has been completed, and Rs 700 crore is set for completion by 2025.
The government's focus includes strengthening water transport infrastructure on National Waterways 2 and 16 — the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, through terminal construction, passenger vessels, and skill development. The Minister also emphasised training local talent in advanced maritime skillsets.
The review also covered projects like the proposed IWT project at Doyang Lake and potential tourism activities on Noune and Shilloi lakes in Nagaland. Feasibility studies are ongoing on rivers in Mizoram and Meghalaya, including Tiawng, Chhimtuipui, Umiam Lake, and the Ummgot River (NW106).
