Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) has partnered with the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) to develop a detailed project report (DPR) focused on transforming under-utilised urban pockets in Chennai.
Key sites include the historic Broken Bridge area in Adyar, covering approx. 14,120 sq. mtrs., which is planned to be turned into a vibrant leisure and tourism hub featuring an adventure zone, beachfront cafés, and a health loop. Additional redevelopment will target spaces beneath the MRTS line near Indira Nagar Railway Station (6,176 sq m) and beneath the Velachery Rail Over Bridge (9,270 sq. mtrs.), redesigning them into multifunctional civic zones with retail outlets, dynamic lighting, and children’s play areas.
The Rs 53 lakh DPR contract was signed in the presence of CMRL MD MA Siddique. This initiative aims to enhance public amenities, boost tourism and wellness, and stimulate local economic growth by activating transit-adjacent areas into engaging community spaces.
