Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) has announced the construction of a skywalk at Vadapalani station to seamlessly connect the Phase-I and Phase-II metro networks. The skywalk aims to ease commuter transitions, especially for those traveling between Poonamallee and Chennai Central.
Once complete, passengers can walk directly from Vadapalani Phase II station to the ticketing level of the Phase I station without exiting to the street. Vadapalani is a strategic node, interlinking the 54 km Phase-I and 118.9 km Phase-II lines. CMRL is currently executing the Rs 63,246 crore Phase-II project, with the Poonamallee–Porur stretch launching later this year, and the Porur–Vadapalani–Kodambakkam stretch opening next year.
The skywalk, 130 mtrs. long and six mtrs. wide, will be a covered walkway designed for all-weather commuter comfort. Bids for construction have already been floated, and the project is expected to take nine months from contractor selection to completion.
