The Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA) has signed a tripartite agreement with GAIL (India) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) to produce compressed biogas (CBG) from urban solid waste in six municipal corporations.
These include Ambikapur, Raigarh, Korba, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon, and Dhamtari. Under the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) scheme, the initiative aims to process 350 tonne of urban waste daily, along with 500 tonne of surplus biomass, to generate 70 tonne of CBG per day. GAIL will establish CBG plants in Ambikapur, Raigarh, and Korba, while BPCL will set up plants in Bilaspur, Dhamtari, and Rajnandgaon.
The project involves an investment of Rs 600 crore. The initiative also supports organic farming by utilising co-products from the plants. Additionally, it will ensure effective waste disposal, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and help the state work towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
