Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board's
500 MW Korba East thermal power plant will begin commercial production from
early 2007. Announced in February 2001, this was the first project taken up by
the then newly-constituted Chhattisgarh SEB.
Bharat Heavy Electricals was awarded
the Rs.1,572 crore EPC contract to develop the 2x250 MW power plant in April
2004. BHEL committed to develop the coal-fired plant within three years.
The first phase of 250 MW will begin
commercial power generation in March 2007 while the second and final unit of 250
mw will begin production latest by May 2007.
Chhattisgarh's current power capacity
is 1,405 MW including 1,280 MW from thermal plants and 125 MW from hydel plants.
Background: Chhattisgarh was
formed on 1 November 2000 through the bifurcation of Madhya Pradesh. The
Chhattisgarh Electricity Board came into existence in early 2001.The Korba East
project will be the first power plant to commission after the new state was
formed. The project was earlier conceived as a 2x210 MW project but the capacity
was revised to 2x250 MW keeping in mind future energy demand.
