Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals (GACL) plans to set up a 1,00,000 tpa chlorinated organics unit at Dahej in Bharuch district of Gujarat. The project, spread over 250 acre, is estimated to cost Rs 700 crore.
Conceptualised in 2008, the project was stuck for various issues. Firstly, GACL and Dow Europe had entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in 2008. The delay in the project implementation by Dow Europe forced GACL to break the 50:50 joint venture with Dow Europe.
Secondly, the company was battling for environmental clearance (EC), government clearance and financial closure. After a wait of nearly two years or so, an official at GACL has disclosed with Projects Today that the company has attained financial closure.
Further, GACL received all necessary approvals and EC for the project. At present, design and engineering work was still underway. Moreover, the company is scouting for civil contractor and equipment supplier.
Consultant is from the in-house team, Shin Etsu from Japan is the technical collaborator and L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering will support as design and engineering consultant. The chlorinated organics unit is set for completion in April 2020.
