For the first time, a private agency, Maheswari Mining has launched coal exploration in Lunglei district of Mizoram, starting in March 2025.
The activity, focused on Rotlang West, was revealed by geologist C Malsawmkima at the Geological Society of Mizoram’s general body meeting in Aizawl. Initial surveys found three coal-bearing sites with streaks measuring seven cm, 12cm, and eight cm, and more areas with potential. A borehole sample has been sent to the National Metallurgical Laboratory in Jamshedpur to assess coal quality and trace rare earth elements.
The meeting, attended by Commerce & Industries Minister F Rodingliana, also addressed hydrocarbon and REE explorations. Discussions included institutional collaboration and securing Central funds. From 2005 to 2025, Mizoram earned Rs 101.68 cr in mineral revenue—Rs 63.05 cr from minor minerals and Rs 38.62 cr from petroleum exploration licences.
