Concord Control Systems (CNCRD) has bagged an order from NTPC to develop the world’s largest 3100 HP hydrogen-fuelled locomotive propulsion system.
Through its subsidiary, Advance Rail Controls (ARCPL), Concord is set to create a groundbreaking propulsion system that will transform a diesel locomotive into a hydrogen-powered one, marking a global first. This project is part of India’s broader initiative to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in railways by 2030, and it positions India as a leader in heavy-duty green locomotive technology. The conversion will exceed the previous global benchmark of 1,600 HP for hydrogen-powered rail systems. Notably, this is not just a prototype but a fully deployable solution for freight operations.
Speaking on the announcement, Gaurav Lath, Joint Managing Director of Concord, said, “As a research-backed railway technology company, our conviction is to push the boundaries of innovation, and our promise is to deliver propulsion systems that meaningfully advance the global journey towards zero emissions. Hydrogen-powered locomotives represent a decisive step in creating future-ready, sustainable railway starting in India, aiming for the world.”
