Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that a detailed project report has been prepared to upgrade the Pune–Kolhapur highway at an estimated cost of Rs 6,000 crore, along with plans to strengthen the Pune–Satara corridor.
Responding to a query from Baramati MP Supriya Sule during the winter session, Minister Gadkari explained that work on two tunnels near Khambatki Ghat is already underway, with one set for inauguration soon. Calling the route crucial for regional connectivity, said the ministry is re-examining the project and using its own funds to develop service lanes along the western bypass, while contracts for works between Satara and Kolhapur have been awarded. He added that a review meeting will take place next week to assess progress and consider suggestions from MPs.
Emphasising timely execution, the Minister noted, “The govt will start to implement the DPR,” and said the goal is to finish key surface improvements within a year to ease travel for commuters heading toward Bengaluru.
