The Delhi government has ramped up the implementation of four major trunk drain projects under its revamped Drainage Master Plan, aimed at providing long-term relief from waterlogging in the city.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that these initiatives would enhance the city's ability to manage heavy monsoon rainfall. In West Delhi, a 4.5 km trunk drain costing Rs 220.93 crore will tackle chronic flooding in Kirari, Mundka, Bawana, and Nangloi. The project, led by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, will handle runoff from a 1,520-acre catchment. In South Delhi, the 11.38 km MB Road drain overhaul, valued at Rs 387.84 crore, will be completed in about two-and-a-half years. The 7.2 km Kirari-Rithala drain in the northwest, costing Rs 250.21 crore, and improvements along Rohtak Road (Rs 184 crore) are also underway, with completion expected by March 2026.
This push follows the unveiling of the Rs 57,000-crore Delhi Drainage Master Plan 2025, which targets a 50 percent reduction in flooding over the next five years. CM Gupta noted that the city's drainage infrastructure, based on plans from the 1970s, urgently needs modernisation. The projects are slated for completion between 2026 and 2027, with significant investments in each.
