The Karnataka government has granted a two-year extension for the completion of the 24/7 drinking water supply project for Hubballi-Dharwad, originally awarded to a private firm.
Due to several delays, including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, land acquisition issues, and delays in the handover of the water distribution system, the project was unable to meet its initial deadlines. Although the company had requested an extension until June 2028, the government has mandated that the continuous water supply must be operational by June 2027.
Savita Katigennavar, Superintending Engineer at Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC), stated that the project, which began in March 2020, has completed only 55 percent of its work by December 2025. "The challenge now is to complete the remaining 45% in the given period," she said. Key components like the water pipeline and purification units are nearing completion, with major milestones expected within the next two to three months. The project aims to provide tap connections to 120,586 homes, with 34,211 already connected.
