The Delhi government has set an eight-month deadline to complete the long-delayed Barapullah Phase-III project, following the final tree-related clearance from the Supreme Court-appointed central empowered committee.
The elevated corridor will connect Mayur Vihar-I in east Delhi with AIIMS in south Delhi, linking to the existing flyover near Sarai Kale Khan. Officials expect the 3.5-km corridor to ease east-west traffic, reducing congestion on NH-24, DND Flyway, and Ring Road. Work has started with fabrication sites ready and tree removal tenders issued, supervised by the forest department. A detailed tree survey found 85 trees will be felled, 87 transplanted, and 161 saved with pruning across divisions.
Originally launched in 2015 and due by October 2017, the project faced delays from land, clearances, floods, and coordination issues. The corridor features environmental safeguards including pier-supported structures and extradosed bridges, three lanes each way, cycle tracks, and eight loops for smoother connectivity.
