An additional double-decker flyover is being considered in Pune's Kothrud area as part of the proposed Metro route extension from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk. This initiative follows the success of the Nal Stop Chowk flyover.
Officials from Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) recently discussed the project with Pune MP and Union Minister of State for Cooperation and Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol. Other Metro routes, such as Kharadi to Pune Airport and Katraj to Hinjewadi, were also reviewed, along with the possibility of an interchangeable, multimodal transport hub in Kharadi. As traffic congestion is a persistent issue on the Vanaz-Chandni Chowk route, the Metro line on this stretch may be integrated into a double-decker flyover, ensuring smoother traffic flow.
PMC officials highlighted that the Nal Stop flyover work began in 2019 and opened for public use in 2022. Spanning about 550 mtrs., the flyover has ramps on both ends, significantly reducing congestion for vehicles traveling from Law College Road and Mhatre Bridge to Karve Road. The proposed Katraj-Chandni Chowk-Hinjewadi Metro route is also viewed as a critical link for future public transport, connecting prime areas and forming a circular transit system for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Establishing a multimodal transport hub in Kharadi would provide seamless Metro access to Pune Airport from various parts of the city. However, PMC is yet to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the Metro extension from Kharadi to Pune Airport. This extension will be part of the already approved Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi line, connecting the airport to the Metro network.
