In a bid to address worsening traffic congestion in Delhi, the Rekha Gupta-led government is planning an ambitious elevated corridor project over the city’s Inner Ring Road. The existing Inner Ring Road stretches about 55 km from Shalimar Bagh in north Delhi to Azadpur.
The proposed elevated corridor will be approx. 80 km long, factoring in ramps, loops, and link roads to enhance connectivity and alleviate bottlenecks. The project is expected to cost between Rs 5,500 crore and Rs 6,000 crore, with an estimated construction cost of Rs 100 crore per km. Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma has instructed officials to expedite the appointment of a consultant and begin preparing a detailed project report (DPR). “Looking at the increasing traffic load on the Ring Road, we plan to construct this elevated corridor over the existing road. Some land will be acquired, and ramps and loops will be built to connect the elevated road with arterial routes,” Minister Verma said.
Major choke points like AIIMS, Moolchand, Dhaula Kuan, Ashram, and ITO will benefit from the project. The corridor is expected to streamline traffic dispersal to other arterial routes, highways, and airport links.
