The fuel loading at India’s first prototype fast breeder reactor (PFBR) in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, is set to commence next week, marking a crucial milestone in the country’s nuclear energy program.
Developed by BHAVINI (Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam), the 500 MWe sodium-cooled reactor is only the second of its kind globally, with Russia operating the other. The PFBR will play a key role in India’s three-stage nuclear strategy by using spent fuel from existing reactors and recycling it to power future thorium-based reactors, helping reduce radioactive waste. Despite facing technical challenges after its inauguration last year, these issues have been resolved.
Officials expect the reactor to reach first criticality within six months of fuel loading and gradually ramp up to full capacity. This advancement is significant for India’s pursuit of sustainable nuclear energy and energy security.
