According to official information
released by the Union ministry of roadways, transport and highways, the
Kolkata-Chennai arm of the Golden Quadrilateral was 91 per cent complete as of
31 May 2006.
The ministry stated that out of the
entire 1684 km of highway that is being four-laned, the total completed
stretches aggregated 1537 km (or 91 per cent), as of 31 May 2006. The remaining
147 km (9 per cent) are being adversely affected by exogenous conditions.
Around 45 km of stretches on the
Laxmanath-Baleshwar and Sunakhala-Ganjam sections are being affected by
hindrances in land acquisition. Another 41 km spread over the Baleshwar-Bhadrak
and Bhubaneshwar-Khurda sections are facing delays relating to project
contractors. Litigations have impeded the progress of 51 km of stretches on the
Ganjam-Icchapuram section. A 10-km strip on the Srikakulam-Champawati section
has been terminated and is likely to be awarded.
The union ministry has maintained that
it would complete the Kolkata-Chenai arm of the Golden Quadrilateral by December
2006, except for 104 km of stretches.
