The Union Government has released funds for implementing the Bhima Lift
Irrigation Scheme (BLIS) in Mahabubnagar district in Andhra Pradesh.
The Union Government has released Rs 1,156 crore as outright grant BLIS under
Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP). The government has promised to
give another Rs 73.63 crore for BLIS on which Rs 1,416 crore had been spent so
far.
Currently, final touches are being given to the head works of the First Lift
of the massive BLIS. These works include the tunnel that draws Krishna water
from the reservoir of Jurala dam, the surge-pool and power-house which receive
and pump this water into a hill-top cistern through four mammoth pipelines,
using giant pumpsets. All these components of the BLIS' Second Lift at
Ramanapadu which also draws water from Jurala reservoir at a place 42 km from
the tapping point of the first lift, have just been completed.
Each of the two lifts will take the river water to a height of 200 ft and
convey it to crops by gravitation canals, each 80 km long, connected by
balancing reservoirs at Budpoor, Sangambanda, Yenukunta, Sankarasamudram, and
Rangasamudram. Bhima will also provide drinking water to 196 villages.
