GAIL (India) is set to operate its five million tonne per year Dabhol LNG terminal in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, during the monsoon season for the first time, following the completion of a breakwater facility. Traditionally, the terminal has been shut from 25 May each year for about four months due to high tides during the monsoon.
With the new infrastructure in place, the terminal is now capable of receiving LNG cargoes year-round. “Our breakwater has been completed. We have applied for an all weather terminal status with the authorities and hope to get authorisation in a week's time. So we will schedule LNG cargoes accordingly,” GAIL Chairman Sandeep Kumar Gupta informed. The breakwater would enable ship access, significantly enhancing the terminal’s operational flexibility and reliability.
In addition to enabling monsoon operations, GAIL is planning a phased capacity expansion of the Dabhol terminal. The company aims to increase the terminal's capacity to 6.3 million tonne per year by mid-2027 and further to 12.5 million tonnes annually by 2031–32.
