The Telangana government has approved the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) proposal to develop a comprehensive Storm Water Master Plan for the Telangana Core Urban Region (TCUR), a vital economic and urban zone encompassing GHMC and its surrounding areas.
Approved by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department, the plan aims to tackle persistent urban flooding caused by complex hydrological systems and high population density. It will address flood risks in key catchments like the Musi River, Hussain Sagar, and Osman Sagar.
Key objectives of the Master Plan include improved drainage infrastructure to prevent flooding, enhanced water quality through pollution control, cost-effective project prioritisation, and promotion of green infrastructure such as rain gardens. The initiative will be supported by a geo-referenced database of the storm water drainage (SWD) system, along with advanced hydraulic and hydrologic modelling techniques.
GHMC has been permitted to invite expressions of interest (EOI) from qualified consultants to prepare the plan. The GHMC Commissioner has been directed to secure all necessary approvals before tendering begins.
