The reconstructed Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge in Andheri, Mumbai, became fully operational on 11 May, 2025 restoring a critical east-west link after being shut for seven years. The overpass, spanning 511 mtrs. with a 27-mtrs. width, connects Western Express Highway in Andheri East to Swami Vivekanand Road in Andheri West via Teli Gully, and includes a 90-mtrs. stretch over railway tracks, three lanes each way for vehicles, and pedestrian pathways.
Demolition of the original structure and reconstruction began in March 2021, with work over the railway lines commencing in April 2023. The first phase, allowing west-to-east movement of light vehicles, was opened in February 2024. Progress on the project stalled due to a misalignment with the Barfiwala Flyover, which had been built over a decade earlier. To rectify the issue, experts from IIT Bombay and Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) were enlisted to oversee the realignment, lifting the Barfiwala flyover's arms using hydraulic jacks.
With the completion of the second phase, the full functionality of the bridge was inaugurated by State IT and Cultural Affairs Minister, Ashish Shelar. Calling it a “unique example of engineering”, he praised the effort involved in overcoming the project's hurdles.
BMC Additional Commissioner Abhijit Bangar confirmed that two more bridges would open soon—the Vikhroli east-west connector by May 31 and Carnac Bridge in South Mumbai by June 10. The operational Gokhale Bridge is expected to significantly ease congestion in Andheri and improve mobility across the suburb’s busy corridors.
