The Union government has received expressions of interest from 35 domestic and foreign companies for the first four projects of the ultra mega power project series.

Domestic companies to have shown interest include NTPC, Tata Power Co, Reliance Energy, GMR Industries, GVK Power, Essar Power, Torrent Power, Jindal Steel & Power, Jaiprakash Industries, etc. Foreign companies to have responded favourably to the call include China Light & Power, AES Corporation, Korea Electric Power, Mitsui & Co, etc.

The government has so far invited bids for four projects -- at Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Bids for the fifth project at Chhattisgarh are encountering delays according to information received by ProjectsToday. The power ministry is extending the series to include two more projects at Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.
