The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has begun work on the Rs 3,847crore, 14 km long Goregaon-Mulund-Link road (GMLR).
The project was first recommended by American transportation and infrastructure consultants Wilbur Smith and Associates back in 1963.
The cost of the project, pegged at Rs 1,300 crore in 2012, has escalated due to a change in design of the project which has seen the addition of three flyovers, one underpass, one roundabout and a box tunnel under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP).
The proposed project entails construction of a five km long, six lane tunnel under SGNP, between Film City in Goregaon to Bhandup in the central suburbs.
MCGM has set aside a budget of Rs 2,347.72 crore in FY 2018 for GMLR. The remaining funds will be allocated in FY 2019 once the ongoing work is completed.
