The state government has approved a budget of Rs 13.42 crore for a comprehensive LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey to assess the condition of the Godavari delta irrigation system and Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage in Dowleswaram.
The survey, set to be conducted via a specialised aircraft, aims to map vital infrastructure, including canals, embankments, and encroachments, with high precision. Experts have finalised the survey methodology, which is expected to provide scientific data crucial for the modernization of the irrigation system. The Godavari delta serves as a lifeline, supplying irrigation to over 10 lakh acres of agricultural land and providing drinking water to more than 1.2 crore people.
Spanning 788 km of major canals, 4,578 km of minor canals, and extensive drainage networks, the survey will help plan future irrigation reforms. The entire project is expected to be completed within six to nine months.
