The Mahayuti government announced a series of Mumbai-focused urban renewal initiatives during the Winter Assembly Session in Nagpur, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde.
A “housing for all” scheme aims to make redevelopment viable in western suburbs constrained by defence establishments, radar installations, and other restrictions. The plan provides free floor space for economically weaker sections and reconstruction of homes for lower-income groups, with unused development rights convertible into transferable development rights.
To unlock redevelopment, high-frequency radar centres at Dahisar and Juhu will be relocated, with Dahisar moving to Gorai at the state’s expense, and half of the vacated land will become a public garden. Slum redevelopment projects on plots larger than 50 acres have been approved at 17 locations, including Govandi, Antop Hill, Borivali, Dahisar, Chembur, Vikhroli, and Bhandup.
Additionally, 25,000 slum and tribal households in and around Sanjay Gandhi National Park will be rehabilitated within a five-km radius, likely through joint ventures of state agencies and the BMC.
