The HPCL Rajasthan Refinery (HRRL) complex in Barmer, Rajasthan will commence operations by 2024 and it will have the capacity to process nine mln tpa of crude. This was announced by Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri on 21 February, 2023.
The greenfield refinery-cum-petrochemical complex is being set up by a joint venture (JV) company HPCL Rajasthan Refinery (HRRL) of HPCL and Rajasthan government, which holds 74 percent and 26 percent stakes, respectively.
So far, more than 60 percent of the project has been completed.
With the capacity to produce more than 2.4 mln tpa of petrochemicals, the project will steer India towards its vision of achieving 450 mln tpa refining capacity by 2030. Further, it will lead to import substitution of petrochemicals once the complex is commissioned.
The project has been conceived under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ as well as ‘Make in India’ vision.
