The Himachal Pradesh government has launched a new eco-tourism policy aimed at developing 77 ecotourism sites across different forest circles of the state, targeting Rs 200 crore in revenue over the next five years.
Sites are spread across Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Bilaspur, Solan, Dharamshala, Palampur, Chamba, Dalhousie, Nurpur, Rampur, Nahan, Hamirpur, Nalagarh, and Rekong Peo. Eco-tourism operators have already been selected for seven popular locations including Potter Hill, Shoghi, Solang Nallah, and Kasol, while the remaining sites will be developed in phases. Visitors will have access to eco-friendly activities such as trekking, jungle walks, camping, birdwatching, homestays, and nature trails.
The initiative also supports biodiversity, with the state aiming to increase forest cover to 30 percent by 2030.
A government spokesperson emphasised community participation, stating eco-tourism committees have been set up in every forest circle. Over 70 youth have been trained as nature guides and 135 as multipurpose workers by HPECOSOC, ensuring employment. Tourists can now book over 100 forest rest houses and camping sites online, with 245 trekking routes listed. A mobile app is also under development.
