Kerala’s Idukki has become India’s first district to be linked to National Optic Fibre Network (NOFN).
The project was launched by the government with an aim to connect all the villages in the country with high speed broadband.
The telecom ministry, on Monday, made the formal announcement of linking the hilly districts with eight block offices and 53 gram panchayats to the network. The fibre was laid by state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam.
The government expects to connect 20,000 villages across the country for the project. Kerala is scheduled to be digitally connected by the end of March. Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are likely to follow next.
The telecom department has advanced the deadline for the project to December 2016 from March 2017.
