The Centre has given in-principle approval for the Atal Progress-way, also known as the Chambal Expressway, marking a major step towards improving regional connectivity across North and Central India.
The 420-km access-controlled corridor will link the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway with the Bundelkhand Expressway, passing through Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 14,000 crore, will be developed by the National Highways Authority of India and will include expansion of existing highways along with new greenfield stretches. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed the approval following a high-level review meeting attended by senior ministers and state leadership. An official said, “After major modification in the alignment, the environment clearances have been obtained.”
The revised alignment avoids forest, wildlife and Chambal ravine areas. Connecting Kota, Etawah, Morena and Bhind, the expressway is expected to cut travel time from 10–11 hours to about 5–6 hours. It will also boost cargo movement, improve links with key highways and support development in aspirational regions.
