India has commenced construction of a new airport at the southern tip of Great Nicobar Island, a project aimed at boosting both defence capabilities and civilian connectivity.
The airport is designed to accommodate larger military aircraft, significantly reducing response times for defence operations in the Indian Ocean Region. Currently, the nearest major airport, Veer Savarkar International Airport, is over 500 km away, making rapid deployments difficult. The airport will be developed in phases, with a long-term master plan that accounts for projected growth in air traffic and prioritises efficient land use and cost management.
The infrastructure has been designed with sustainability in mind, with a focus on minimising disruption to the existing landforms. Once completed, the airport will not only improve military readiness but also enhance civilian access to the region, reinforcing India's presence in the strategically important Indian Ocean.
