The Draft National Electricity Policy (NEP) 2026 has been launched, setting targets for India’s electricity sector.
The policy aims for per capita electricity consumption to rise to 2,000 kWh by 2030 and over 4,000 kWh by 2047. This aligns with India’s climate goals, including a 45% reduction in emissions intensity by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The draft focuses on clean energy, with an emphasis on renewable capacity additions, energy storage, and the modernisation of the national grid. It also proposes structural reforms in power tariffs and distribution companies to reduce financial stress.
The policy encourages market-based mechanisms for renewable power, promotes battery storage systems, and supports the domestic manufacturing of battery components. The draft also advocates repurposing thermal plants for grid support and expanding nuclear power capacity.
