India's interstate transmission system (ISTS) has experienced a substantial addition of transformation capacity, as per the latest data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Between April and October of FY26, the country added 52,625 MVA of transformation capacity at voltage levels of 220kV and above. Notably, 64 percent of this increase—33,505 MVA, was on the ISTS network, a figure surpassing the total added in both FY23 and FY24. This trend indicates that the total ISTS capacity in FY26 will likely exceed the previous year’s achievement of 39,335 MVA.
The standout achievement in FY26 has been the sharp rise in 765kV substations, led by Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL), which added 30,000 MVA during the first seven months. “PGCIL continues to drive growth with its ISTS-TBCB schemes,” the CEA stated.
