India’s largest single shield tunnel boring machine (TBM), measuring 13.34 mtrs., has been successfully lowered at the Thane portal, marking a historic milestone for the Thane– Borivali Twin Tunnel project.
With a total investment of Rs 20,000 crore, this project is set to revolutionise urban mobility in Mumbai, marking the country’s longest and widest urban tunnel upgrade in Mumbai's mobility infrastructure. The twin tunnel will cover 10.8 km, with 5.75 km excavated from Borivali and 6.09 km from Thane, all at a depth of about 60 mtrs. Once completed, it will reduce the travel time between the eastern and western suburbs from 60-90 minutes to just 15 minutes. This venture promises to ease congestion, cut pollution, and enhance connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The project, executed by MEIL and led by MMRDA, marks a significant step in addressing the city's mobility challenges, with the TBM advancing at 11 mtrs. per day through tough underground conditions.
