On 16 July 2008, Union Minister for
Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Mr TR Baalu inaugurated a 3.6 km long
flyover including an elevated stretch on NH 1 at Panipat in Haryana.
The proposed flyover, a part of the 10
km Panipat Elevated Expressway Project, involved widening the existing four-lane
to six-lanes for a 10 km stretch from KM 86 to KM 96, passing through Panipat.
The elevated portion of this expressway is 3.6 km long and this passes over the
central built-up Panipat section, covering Gohana Road, Sanuli Road, Assandh
Road Crossings, city bus stand and Skylark Tourist Complex in the city.
A separate two-lane peripheral road
with paved shoulders has also been provided on either side of the
access-controlled six-lane highway for the local Panipat traffic, which will not
use the elevated structure. In addition, the construction involved three
underpasses to accommodate 4-lane divided carriageway; 2 minor bridges and
widening/construction/re-construction of culverts, drains, ducts, etc. for
services.
