The Jammu and Kashmir government has launched a comprehensive plan to modernise irrigation schemes in Sonawari constituency, Bandipora district, to improve agricultural facilities.

According to a reply from the Jal Shakti Department, Sonawari’s irrigation network spans 245 km of main canals and 90 km of distributaries, serving 20,625 households across 21,416 acres. Four schemes have already been completed under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP), and 21 more projects have been undertaken in the past five years. Additionally, eight detailed project reports (DPRs) have been developed under NABARD and PMJVK for further improvements.

The key project,"Construction of LIS Odina," aims to lift water from the Jhelum River to enhance irrigation in several villages. These efforts seek to promote agricultural productivity and provide reliable irrigation for local farmers. The government is also addressing water shortages in Srinagar with additional water supply schemes.
