The completion of the Ultra Mega Power projects in Jharkhand are getting uncertain because of the land acquisition issues.
Reliance Power withdrew from the 3,960 MW Tilaiya Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) in Koderma district in 2015 and another 3,960 MW UMPP at Deoghar on 2,600 acre are suffering from land acquisition problems.
Jharkhand will get 25 percent of the power generated by both the UMPPs and the state's share will be around 2,000 MW if both the projects are operational.
Another project, a joint venture between NTPC and the Jharkhand government-run Patratu Thermal Power Station (PTPS), is drawing flak from opposition parties and the plant's employees.
Over the last 15 years, the Jharkhand government signed scores of MoUs in the steel, power and other sectors. The private power companies which had signed MoUs were Tata Power, Essar and Abhijeet Power, apart from Reliance.
Abhijeet Power has set up a 1,900 MW power plant in Latehar district but is now beset with bank loan problems. Essar Power was also slated to start its first 600 MW unit of the 1,800 MW project by the end of 2013 in Latehar district but got delayed. The new deadline is yet to be fixed.
