Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that Jorhat–Dibrugarh section of the National Highway will be completed by 31 December, 2025.
The update followed a high-level meeting in New Delhi on 07 April with Managing Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL), Dr. Krishan Kumar. The meeting also focused on several key infrastructure projects across Assam, reflecting the state's aggressive push towards improved connectivity and regional integration.
Among the most notable projects under review was the 19.28-km-long four-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra River, set to connect Dhubri in Assam with Phulbari in Meghalaya. Upon completion, it will be India’s longest bridge, a critical milestone in Northeast infrastructure. Discussions also included the transformative Guwahati–Silchar Expressway, a Rs 25,000 crore project which will significantly reduce travel time and bolster connectivity between Assam’s major urban centres.
Another plan on the agenda was the proposed Numaligarh–Gohpur underwater tunnel, a pioneering initiative in the Northeast which could redefine inter-district transportation. Additionally, the expansion of highway corridors between Baihata Chariali-Tezpur and Gohpur-Kulajan was reviewed, further emphasising the state’s commitment to comprehensive infrastructure development.
