Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will inaugurate the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project on 21 June 2019.
The project is designed to bring drinking water and irrigation to the parched areas of the state. Around 225 TMC water will be drawn through irrigation, including 180 TMC from the Godavari river basin and the rest through other projects.
The project involves building reservoirs at various places and is expected to irrigate 18.24 lakh acre of land, provide 56 TMC of drinking water and another 10 TMC for industrial purpose.
The mega irrigation project is worth over Rs 80,000 crore. The project was originally called Pranahita-Chevella project.
The cost of the project escalated from Rs 40,300 crore. Earlier, as per the original plan, water was to be drawn from the Godavari river by constructing a barrage at Tummidihatti village in Adilabad district to irrigate 16.14 lakh acre.
Now, the same has been be done at Medigadda village in Jayshankar-Bhoopalpally district.
Among the reservoirs being constructed, the biggest is Komuravelli Mallanna Sagar reservoir of 50 TMC.
