The much delayed Kalyani-Barrackpore-Dum Dum expressway is likely to be complete, with state government sorting out the land acquisition hurdles in West Bengal.
The complete stretch of about 43 km is being developed by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), to 4-laning under the JNNURM scheme. The project was held up due to encroachment and other land acquisition problems on the three km odd stretch towards Dum Dum. At present, a stretch of about 40 km, out of the total 43 km stretch of the expressway, from Kalyani to Madhusudan Banerjee Road is in operation. Once completed, it will take less than an hour for motorists to drive the distance from Kolkata airport to Kalyani. Those commuting to Dum Dum from Barrackpore and Barasat will be able to avoid the congested BT and Jessore roads, respectively.
KMDA had also worked on preparing a Land Use and Development Control Plan of the areas lying within 500 metres of either side of the expressway to prevent unplanned development.
