The Kandla Special Economic Zone
(KASEZ), spread over 700 acres, is planning to collaborate with the Kandla Port
Trust (KPT) to develop a multi-point special economic zone (SEZ) in Gujarat. The plan, jointly developed by KPT and KASEZ,
would be submitted to the Centre soon.
The move follows the Union Commerce
Ministry’s approval to a proposal submitted by the Cochin Port Trust and the
Cochin Special Economic Zone to develop a multi-point SEZ in Kochi.
According to Mr Yogendra Garg, Joint
Development Commissioner, Kandla Port Trust, Kandla being the second largest
and one of the most happening ports in the country with excellent draft also
enjoys the benefits of a SEZ close to it. Most of the lands in the entire
Gandhidham city where both the port and the SEZ are located are owned by the
KPT.
The two entities are working on a
plan wherein KPT would manage most of the activities in the SEZ and KASEZ would
only look after the future development aspect.
KASEZ is spread over only 700 acres
of land in which the industrial area is located in 620 acres
A few days back KPT had handed over
300 acres of land to KASEZ which will be developed by the later in the next one
year and would be treated as part of the KASEZ.
The Kandla port is the only port in
the country which enjoys such close proximity with an operational SEZ and if
KASEZ is brought under KPT in future, it may provide benefits to both the
organisations as well the industry houses, mainly into the exports.
