The Karnataka Government is planning to take up pending irrigation projects in the Krishna river valley to utilise its share of waters.
The state government has earmarked Rs 17,000 crore for the purpose by 2018. It intends to raise the height of Almatti dam as suggested by the Krishna Waters Dispute Tribunal (KWDT). Currently, works are being undertaken for better utilisation of water. About 5.30 lakh ha will come under irrigation following the completion of the third stage of the project. In December 2010, KWDT II had allocated the maximum share of 1001 tmc feet of water to Andhra Pradesh followed by 911 to Karnataka and 666 to Maharashtra.
