The Karnataka Government has reportedly identified three sites for
ArcelorMittal's proposed six million tpa integrated steel plant.
Among the locations suggested to the company include the iron-ore belt of
Bellary-Koppal in North Karnataka. However, the other two locations have not
been revealed by the state government. An MoU in this regard is expected to be
signed by May 2010.
The proposed project is estimated to cost Rs 30,000 crore. According to
sources, the investment details are still being worked out. The company had also
proposed setting up a 750 MW power plant in the vicinity of the steel plant.
The company has sought 4,000 acre for setting up the steel plant and the
power plant. The proposal is expected to be taken to the state government's
high-powered committee.
The plant is expected to take anywhere between four to five years for
commissioning.
