Karnataka is poised to strengthen its power supply, with nearly 50 percent of its allocated share expected from Units 5 and 6 at the Kaiga Nuclear Power Station (KNPS) in Uttara Kannada.
“The allocation will be decided by the Union Ministry for Power. Even then, the state will have a lion’s share, where nearly 50% of the power will be given to the state,” said Umed Yadav, Head Corporate Commissioner, NPCIL. Currently, Karnataka receives 35 percent of its power from four KNPS units, each generating 220 MW.
The two upcoming 700 MW units are expected to be operational by 2030, feeding the southern grid shared with neighbouring states. Site Director Vinod Kumar B assured that safety protocols are in place and clearances from the Ministry of Environment and Forests have been secured.
Construction will begin post-monsoon, following completed excavation works. The turbine package has been awarded to BHEL, while Megha Engineers and Infrastructure Ltd will handle the nuclear package.
