Kerala’s first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), coming up at Mylatty in Kasaragod, is on track for completion well ahead of schedule, with commissioning expected before next summer season. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on 10 April, 2025 between Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), marking a major step forward in the state's renewable energy transition.
The project aims to address peak-hour power shortages and enhance grid stability across the state. KSEB officials confirmed that the BESS, being implemented under the public private partnership (PPP) model, is set to be completed within nine months, halving the initially scheduled 18-month timeline. The acceleration is being driven by an early completion incentive of Rs 8.40 crore declared by KSEB.
The Rs 135 crore project had earlier secured viability gap funding from the Central government, highlighting its importance in the national renewable energy roadmap. Following the Mylatty project, Kerala is set to receive a larger 125 MW/500 MWh BESS from National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC). Additional BESS installations are planned at four more locations: Sreekantapuram (40 MW), Pothencode (40 MW), Areekode (30 MW), and Mulleria (15 MW). Each of these projects will offer energy discharge capabilities for up to four hours, further strengthening the state's energy resilience.
