Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) has awarded contract for construction of three boat terminals for the Rs 750 crore Water Metro project to Marymatha Construction Company. The three terminals will come up at Vyttila, Eroor and Kakkanad, which the modern AC ferries will cover in the Phase-I of the project.
The tender was awarded for Rs 29.67 crore. There were a total of four bidders in the tender process. The Vyttila terminal will cover an area of 25,000 sq ft, including commercial space. It will be the biggest in terms of area. T
he operations control centre of the Water Metro project too will be located at Vyttila, where KMRL was allowed usage of 123 cents of land for the terminal by Vyttila Mobility Hub Society. Tenders for the construction of terminals at High Court, Fort Kochi and Mattanchery, Vypeen and Bolgatty are progressing fast.
The number of terminals could be increased to 45, when the Water Metro is extended to places such as Kumbalanghi in subsequent phases. The evaluation of financial bids submitted by firms which are in the fray to supply the first lot of 28 ferries for the project is underway.
