L&T’s shipyard at Kattupalli in Tamil Nadu is almost ready to take up construction of large high-end warships. However, the company is yet to receive any construction of order for warships from the Union Ministry of Defence.
For the time being, the company will only opt for construction of commercial ships and repairs. The yard has been set up the jointly with Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation and is expected to be fully commissioned in 2012. The company which has a contract to build 36 vessels for the Coast Guard will partially execute the order at Kattupalli.
The company opines that the Union Government has been continuing with its policy of keeping away the private sector from defence.
